Washington, D.C
Progress requires compromise, and compromise leads to paradox. That is the beautiful and rich complexity of the history of Washington, DC, from inception to the present day. And it’s the fascinating stories of the people, places and events behind that history which we will uncover during our time together.
Hidden DC Tour -
We will start our tour at the National Portrait Gallery where Lincoln held his second Inaugural Ball. That will set the theme for the evening as we will wander the streets of present day downtown but look at it through the eyes of its citizens of the 19th century.
We will pass by where the conspirators plotted Lincoln’s assassination. Then wander through Judiciary Square being introduced to Judges and commoners who defined not only the history of the City but the history of the United States. On Pennsylvania Avenue we will go back in time to hear about the first DC race riot and how it sowed the seeds for Civil War.
But it’s not all grand history, we’ll also share quirky stories of civic reformers and their efforts to improve DC.
Returning back to F St we’ll finish our tour at the Riggs Hotel and hear about the role of the great financiers in supporting the government whilst denying locals the vote…
You will meet heroes, charlatans and fools and you get to decide who is who…
