Charles Fernyhough is Professor of Psychology at Durham University and Director of the Centre. His work on the science of inner experience has included research in the fields of inner speech, memory, mind-wandering, reading, writing, imagination, liminal states and hallucinations.

Kelly Jakubowski is Associate Professor in Music Psychology at Durham and Co-Director of the Centre. She also co-leads Durham's Music and Science Lab. Her research interests include memory for music, music-evoked autobiographical memory, musical imagery and imagination, earworms, absolute pitch, musical timing and movement, and cross-cultural music perception.

Marco Bernini is Associate Professor in Cognitive Literary Studies in the Department of English Studies and Institute for Medical Humanities at Durham University. He specialises in narrative theory, modernism and cognitive approaches to narrative and literature.

Anna M. Borghi is associate professor in Cognitive and General Psychology at Sapienza University of Rome, and associate researcher at ISTC-CNR, Rome. She is interested in the relationship between objects, concepts, language and bodily experiences. Her work on inner experience focuses on the relationship between concepts, especially abstract concepts, and inner speech.

Alexandra Cristea is a Professor of Computer Science and founder of the Artificial Intelligence in Human Systems research group at Durham University. Her research interests include web science, AI, virtual and extended reality, learning analytics and user modelling.

Paul Fletcher is a psychiatrist and Bernard Wolfe Professor of Health Neuroscience at Cambridge University. He is interested in how perceptions and beliefs may deviate from objective measures of reality and why this is both a good and a bad thing.

Chris Gibbs is Public Involvement in Research lead in the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW). He draws on his own lived experience throughout his teaching, writing and research.

Philip Goff is Professor in Philosophy at Durham University. His main research interest is in how consciousness fits into our overall theory of reality, and how panpsychism in particular can help to resolve some of these philosophical problems.

Claudia Hammond is an award-winning BBC broadcaster, author and psychology lecturer. She is Visiting Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Sussex.

Russ Hurlburt's work explores inner experience — thoughts, feelings, sensations, and so on. He is the originator of the Descriptive Experience Sampling method, which uses random beepers and intensive interviews to provide qualitative, idiographic descriptions of inner experience. He is Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Iza Kavedžija is Assistant Professor of Medical Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. She is interested in social anthropological approaches to the study of inner experience, with a particular recent focus on artists in Japan.

Bob Kentridge is Professor of Psychology at Durham University. His research interests are in the relationship between visual attention and visual consciousness, and in the perception of the material properties of objects.

Joel Krueger is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Exeter. His interests are in phenomenology, philosophy of mind and philosophy of cognitive science, with a focus on 4E (embodied, embedded, enacted, extended) approaches to emotions, social cognition, loneliness and psychopathology. He is particularly interested in the way social, cultural and built environments shape our thoughts, feelings and experiences. He also works in comparative philosophy and philosophy of music.

Simone is a neuroscientist with interests in environmental neuroscience and neuroimaging of inner experience. She is Group Leader of the Lise Meitner Group for Environmental Neuroscience at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin.

Tanya Marie Luhrmann is the Albert Ray Lang Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University. Her work focuses on the edge of experience: on voices, visions, the world of the supernatural and the world of psychosis. She is the author of several popular books on spiritual and liminal experience.

Raphael Lyne is Professor of Renaissance Literature in the Faculty of English at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the meeting points of literary criticism and cognitive science, including such topics as memory, attention, mind-wandering, recognition, touch, mind-reading, the extended mind, predictive processing, and 'we'.

Clare Mac Cumhaill works on perception and action with a focus on spatial experience. She has interests in emotion and mental action and in the history of analytic philosophy. She is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at Durham University.

Fiona Macpherson, FRSE, MAE, is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience at the University of Glasgow. She researches the nature of conscious experience. Topics of interest include: perception, illusion, hallucination, imagination, dreaming, the senses, colour, virtual and augmented reality, sensory substitution and augmentation, cognitive penetration, and the structure of experience.

Peter Moseley is Assistant Professor in Psychology at Northumbria University. He is interested in voice-hearing and other psychotic-like experiences – in particular the differences and similarities between clinically relevant and non-clinical experiences. He is also interested in open science, reproducibility and measurement practices in psychological science.

Claire O'Callaghan is NHMRC Research Fellow at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney. She previously held an ARC-funded postdoctoral position at the University of Cambridge. Her work has had a particular focus on visual hallucinations across a range of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease.

Adam Powell is a lecturer in religion and medical humanities at Durham University. His research blends history, sociology, and psychology to explore how individuals and collectives respond to crisis – particularly how unusual sensory/perceptual experiences come to have spiritual significance.

Corinne Saunders is Professor in the Department of English Studies at Durham University. She is an expert in medieval literature and the history of ideas, and has shaped a new, interdisciplinary research area that brings together medieval literary studies, history of ideas and medical humanities to explore the intersections of body, mind and affect.

Anil Seth is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, and Co-Director of the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science. His most recent book is Being You: A new science of consciousness.

Jon Simons is Professor of Psychology at the University of Cambridge. His research investigates the cognitive and brain mechanisms responsible for the subjective experience of remembering, and how we use mental experiences to make sense of the world. This work involves inter-relating cognitive hypotheses with evidence from functional neuroimaging of healthy volunteers and from examining the effects of neurological and psychiatric disorders, and normal aging, on memory abilities.

John Sutton is a cognitive philosopher working on memory and skill. He is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at Macquarie University.

Alexandra Walsham is Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of the British Academy. She has published extensively on the religious and cultural history of early modern Britain, including The Reformation of the Landscape: Religion, Identity and Memory in Early Modern Britain and Ireland (2011) and Generations: Age, Ancestry and Memory in the English Reformations (2023). She was PI on the AHRC project, 'Remembering the Reformation', between 2016-2019.

Patricia Waugh is a literary scholar with a particular interest in representations of inner experience in modernism. She is Professor Emerita of English Studies at Durham

Sam Wilkinson is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Exeter. His interests are in the philosophy of mental health and wellbeing, with a specific focus on hallucinations, delusions, psychosis, trauma, loneliness and inner speech. He also has a general interest in the way that the mind harnesses social and cultural context to enhance and shape inner experience and cognition.
