Leazes Road
Status: in planning
The brief for this project is to redevelop the Leazes Road site. The site is currently home to the College of St Hild and St Bede, the School of Education, the University Day Nursery, the Foundation Programme, the Institute for Medical Humanities, and sections of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences and the Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD).
More information
We are committed to providing a student experience to rival any in the world. Our Collegiate system is central to this.
Our University Strategy, 2017-2027 includes goals to establish four to six new Colleges and ensure over half of our students live in College accommodation. We are also planning to invest heavily in refurbishing our existing Colleges.
We recognise that the Leazes Road site requires significant investment, and are currently considering how we can develop the site to offer the best possible experience for students, staff and other users. Any development will retain the historically important aspects of the site.
Any proposals would also have to be approved by our governing bodies and Durham County Council. No decisions have yet been taken, and no decisions would be taken without consultation with all who would be affected by any proposals. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are needing to review our University Estate Strategy and our existing plans and timescales for developments and refurbishments.
We anticipate that the current users of the Leazes Road site will begin to vacate their buildings in Summer 2022. We're working on plans for where the University Day Nursery will be sited in future. The academic departments currently on this site will be temporarily relocated, possibly into the existing Maths and Computer Sciences buildings, until other estate developments are complete.
