Professor Tony Fawcett, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education)
Responsibilities
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) is responsible for the delivery of the University's Education Strategy, which aims to deliver a premium educational experience for all students that meets diverse needs and ensures future success.
Professional background and expertise
Tony was appointed Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) in August 2015, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) in November 2023. He is also a Professor in the Department of Biosciences. Tony joined Durham in 1995 and has undertaken a number of senior roles, with a focus on improving the educational experience of students.
Tony's disciplinary research focuses on understanding the ways in which plants make and store oil in their seeds, with a view to increasing the amount made without increasing agronomic (water, fertilizer etc.) inputs. His pedagogic interests lie in developing students as independent learners.
Education and qualifications
Tony has a BSc in Applied Biology from Trent Polytechnic and a PhD in Biochemistry from Leicester University.
