The annual report provides an outline of the current state of the institution, highlights progress made over the year in relation to our strategy, and includes the financial statements.
Our financial statements for 2024-25 show an underlying internal operating surplus of £3.6m.
This does not include the “exceptional” costs associated with the Voluntary Severance Scheme of £11.9m.
This outturn represents an improvement on last year’s operating deficit (despite the shortfall in international student recruitment). This is due to unusual fundraising success last year, as well as a whole university effort to bring staff and other operating expenditure back into line with our costs.
However, this is a small operating surplus for a university of our size which allows very little headroom for the investments we need to make in people, estate and IT in order to stay competitive. Durham will continue to manage its finances prudently, as we seek to put the University in a more sustainable position for the long term.
