Durham University believes that all children have the right to grow up in a safe and caring environment, free from the threat of all types of harm and abuse. Durham University is committed to safeguard the welfare of children who engage with members of the University in activities on or offsite, in the course of their work. For the purposes of this website and policy the definition of children includes children and young people up to the age of 18 years old. These webpages set out the University’s arrangements for the protection and safeguarding of children. They also offer guidance to all University members, including students, as well as staff, volunteers and third parties.

When coming into contact with children, members of Durham University have a personal responsibility to:

1. Recognise that we have a duty of care to protect children
2. Understand the legal responsibilities and requirements of undertaking activities that involve children
3. Follow the Code of Conduct, procedures and guidelines outlined in the Safeguarding Children Policy
4. Promote the widespread communication of the Safeguarding Children Policy to all members of the University
