Key definitions
- Children: Members of / visitors to the University who are under 18 years of age.
- Disclosure and Barring Service - DBS (formerly CRB): The government department in England and Wales that ensures employers make safer recruitment decisions to prevent unsuitable individuals from working with children.
- Harm: Inflicting hurt / causing suffering. Physical and / or mental harm could be caused in various settings such as at home or in the wider community. It could be caused by a known or unknown adult or adults, another child or children, or indirectly (eg. through online contact, such as social media). Harm can be categorised as:
- causing actual harm to a child
- putting a child at risk of harm
- failing to act to prevent harm
- attempting to harm a child
- encouraging someone else to harm a child.
- Lead Safeguarding Officer (LSO) and Deputy Lead Safeguarding Officer (DLSO): The University’s main points of contact for individuals wishing to report any incidents of harm or potential harm. Access contact details and further information about the role of LSO and DLSO.
- Safeguarding: The protection of children from harm. Successful safeguarding means that children can grow up in safe surroundings, without damage to their mental and physical health or development.
- Regulated Activity: Any of the following activities which are carried out frequently (and/or overnight) with children (except where the University member is always being supervised by another adult who has been DBS checked):
- caring for, being in charge of, or supervising a child
- teaching, training, or instructing a child
- giving advice or guidance to a child about their physical, emotional, or educational well-being
- transporting children in a vehicle.
- University Members: All staff and students in the University, and third parties; namely, recognised JCRs.
