Assessment

Assessment is rigorous and carried out through exams in January, May and June, assignments and a 12,000-word dissertation in which you carry out independent research and develop your analysis skills.

Outside of timetabled contact hours, you will be expected to undertake your own independent study in preparation for exams, seminars, assignments and other forms of assessment, as well as general background reading in order to broaden your subject knowledge.

In the third term, you will complete a 12,000 word dissertation, which could be a specific project with an organisation. Supervised by a faculty member with relevant experience, you will investigate in greater detail a subject that you have already studied as part of your programme. A major piece of independent work, the dissertation will enable you to exercise critical judgement and illustrate how economic analysis has relevance to financial decision taking.

Durham University Business School is spread across Waterside,a striking new building in the heart of Durham City Centre beside the River Wear and Mill Hill Lane, located just a short walk from university facilities and leafy university grounds south of the city centre. This dual‑site set up means students benefit both from the vibrant, city centre location of Waterside, close to shops, cafes, transport and the railway station, and from the more traditional campus environment at Mill Hill Lane, with peaceful study hubs and proximity to other academic departments.

Finance students have the opportunity to enhance their education through international exposure: the Department offers an International Study Tour as part of some Masters programmes, where students travel to European cities, visit global businesses, engage with industry leaders, and see financial systems in action in different regulatory and economic environments. There is also a Dissertation Abroad option that allows students to conduct part of their research at partner institutions overseas, gaining access to new perspectives, mentors, and unique data or case studies.
