Great success as our latest summer school comes to a close.
We recently hosted 66 delegates from around the world at our annual Durham Islamic Finance Summer School (DIFSS). Having taken place 31 July - 4 August 2023, our intensive programme included 23 sessions and workshops covering foundational issues to contemporary practices in Islamic banking, finance and capital markets and product development workshops.
We were delighted to welcome participants from a variety of backgrounds, including bankers and financiers, legal persons, regulators, public policymakers, politicians, and academic and professional researchers. Their dynamic participation through comments and questions in the workshops and sessions made a significant difference in the successful conduct of the summer school.
Special sessions focusing on Islamic fintech offerings and sustainable development were also another strength of the summer school, responding to the developments in the market.
Members of our School, who delivered the sessions and conducted the workshop, are leading individuals in their specialised fields with amazing professional and educational acumen, contributing to the development of Islamic finance offerings and institutionalisation, their contribution has been an essential factor for the success of DIFSS over the years.
As an intensive five-day programme, our summer school has become a landmark event and essential training programme in the Islamic finance sphere since 2006, with over 1,200 delegates worldwide having benefited from the programme. It has provided a unique training and education platform on the aspects of Islamic banking and finance, as well as Islamic financial and capital market operations through interactive sessions and workshops.
“[This] was an incredible experience. The lectures covered a diverse set of topics, and although delivered by experts in the field, they were accessible to non-experts such as me. The diversity within the participant group was also incredibly fruitful, as ample space for questions and discussion allowed for exchanges across industries, sectors, disciplines and cultures. I definitely wish to go back!” Mari Norbakk - Post-doctoral Researcher, Chr. Michelsen Institute, Norway
"DIFSS also provides its participants with the unique opportunity to convert academic knowledge into real-life experience by interacting and engaging with the speakers and fellow participants from the global finance industry. I consider myself very fortunate to attend the DIFSS 2023, and I have come out of this course with renewed passion and a new mindset about the Islamic Finance industry.” Ali Ashraf - Senior Legal Counsel, Standard Chartered Bank, Dubai
“The 5 days spent [at] DIFSS were packed with learning - from the basics to the latest developments in the industry - delivered by individuals who are experts in their field. It was also a great opportunity to create and expand our network across different sectors and jurisdictions, because of how well-attended DIFSS has been, both in terms of the participants and also the lecturers. It was indeed an optimal use of the summer for us who attended, whether as ones just starting our career in Islamic Finance or seeking to progress further in their career.” Anna Tarhata Basman - Member of the Parliament and Assistant Cabinet Secretary, Bangsamoro Region, Philippines
We are looking forward to our next summer school in July 2024.
