Celebrate Science 2025 draws over 5,000 visitors to Locomotion

Celebrate Science 2025 welcomed more than 5,000 visitors to Locomotion in Shildon for two days of hands-on science activities, live demonstrations and interactive exhibits.
The event was a partnership between Durham University and Locomotion, part of the Science Museum Group, and also supported by Livin, the EPSC Festival of Social Science and The Reece Foundation, and offered a wide range of experiences designed to spark curiosity and make science accessible to all ages.
Feedback from families was overwhelmingly positive, with highlights including virtual reality, archaeology, volcano demonstrations and creative engineering challenges. Volunteers played a key role in creating a welcoming, engaging atmosphere over the two days.
Celebrate Science continues to be a standout event in the region’s science calendar, inspiring young minds and encouraging exploration through fun, practical learning.

Our annual free science festival celebrates Durham University’s latest research with our local community, welcoming 7 to 11 year olds and their families.
Each year during the local schools’ October half-term holiday more than 200 staff and student volunteers from departments across the University engage and inspire young people. Since 2010 well over 71,000 visitors have shared in the excitement of Durham University research.
