Congratulations and Welcome

Message from the MasterProfessor Ann MacLarnon

Welcome to Hatfield College - and congratulations on your academic success!  We are looking forward to meeting you when you come to Durham to join Hatfield College in September. Present students and staff will make every effort to ensure you feel very welcome and supported from the start.

Hatfield is a thoroughly modern-minded College with roots in the traditions of the past - we were founded in 1846 to make university education accessible to more students. Above all, we are a community living and working alongside and supporting each other. Our students come from near and far, from large cities and small towns, from many different backgrounds and experiences, and are studying for degrees across the full subject spread. Our ethos is #AllOneHatfield, as expressed in our recent declaration which recognises the enriching value for all of a diverse, inclusive community of equals.

Our student Common Rooms are important parts of our community in College. You will be contacted in September about joining the Middle Common Room, which is open to all our postgraduate students.  The MCR plays a key role in putting on a variety of activities and events for its members, social, intellectual, and general interest, and in supporting clubs and societies, as well as providing students with information and advice, and representing students' views in College and the broader university. The MCR greatly enhances the quality of their members’ experience of College life; it is a key, central feature of our College community.  I do hope you join the Hatfield MCR and take an active part in College life.

You are welcome to contact us if you have questions via hatfield.pg-admissions@durham.ac.uk or for urgent queries telephone +44 (0) 191 334 2610.

Lastly, beware fake Facebook pages or from other sources about Induction Week in Durham. Only follow links from documents and links in or through this website with "dur.ac.uk" in the relevant part of the address. If you are not certain that a Facebook page or web link is genuine, do contact us.

I very much look forward to welcoming you to Hatfield in September.

A huge part of being a member of Hatfield College is making new networks through college events and most friends I made have turned out to be lifetime friends. Through the college networks, I did not just learn about the British culture, but diverse cultures since I made friends from different countries, which is really exciting. Support from College and the MCR Exec is immense and choosing Hatfield is the best decision I ever made. #Once a Hatfielder, Always a Hatfielder#

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life. Details of College events will be updated once confirmed.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
