Welcome to the Senior Common Room (SCR)
Welcome to the Senior Common Room (SCR) — a vibrant, inclusive community at the heart of Josephine Butler College, Durham University. Whether you are renewing your membership or joining for the first time, your participation helps shape the welcoming and supportive atmosphere that defines our college.
The SCR brings together people — staff, students, alumni, and members of the wider Durham community — through shared experiences, events, and mentoring. We celebrate the college’s accomplishments, respect its history, and look forward to the future with curiosity and pride.
Who We Are
The SCR is a diverse group of people — including staff, alumni, residents, and friends of the college — who work together to enrich college life and strengthen connections between the university and the Durham community.
At its core, the SCR is about connection. Whether chatting over coffee, collaborating on an event, or supporting a student, our members help to create a genuine sense of belonging, friendship, and purpose.
Supporting Students and Staff
SCR members play a vital role in shaping the student experience. Many act as informal college mentors, providing guidance, encouragement, and friendship throughout a student’s time at Durham — relationships that often continue long after graduation.
Others contribute by sharing professional expertise, offering career advice, or sponsoring college events. The SCR thrives on these intergenerational connections, where experience and enthusiasm come together to benefit the whole community.
Events and Activities
