Cranmer Hall

Cranmer Hall is a vibrant and diverse Christian community forming Christlike leaders for today’s church through transformational learning.

Cranmer Hall is part of St John’s College, founded a little over 100 years ago to provide a place for evangelical Anglicans to train for ordained ministry in the context of Durham University. This means that we are a community within a community and thus enjoy the fellowship of a small college and the riches of a world renowned University.

A word from our Warden, Revd Dr Nick Moore

Head and shoulders of the warden of St Johns CollegeA word from our Warden

There has been much debate about indications of a 'quiet revival' following the Bible Society report last year. The interrelation of large-scale quantitative data (from questionnaires and attendance figures, for example) and small-scale qualitative data (from interviews, local experience, and anecdote) is an important consideration when undertaking any kind of empirical research, and it is important to do both well whether separately or together. Our research centres on church planting and on children's, youth, and families ministry are both engaged in research at a range of levels, and shed fascinating light on new worshipping communities and the spirituality of children in our church schools. This work involves our students and ordinands, and in turn feeds into how we train and support them.

Closer to home, our BA is now on UCAS and we have had a good number of prospective students apply, many of whom have visited us for a follow-up interview. This is hugely exciting and rewarding for us, as each of these individuals has a story to tell about God's work in and call on their lives. It is also encouraging that they think Cranmer might be the right place for them to study and train. Time and again we are encountering people who have come to faith as children or teens, or have had a clear sense of urgency and call which has led them to explore studying theology in a confessional context. This has renewed our sense of the fundamental importance of formation - not just of the mind, but of character - for all of our students, not just those with a clear, church-sponsored pathway to ordination or another form of ministry. Do pray that these young adults would find the right path forward, and that through them God would do great things in the church and in the world.
