Congratulations and Welcome to New Undergraduate Students

Many congratulations on receiving your place here at St. John's! I am thrilled that you will be joining our amazing community, and I hope you are excited to start your next chapter here!

Whilst Durham University is an academic institution, life here is far more than just lectures and essays. The St. John's Common Room, which is run by students for students, exists to enrich your time here through our events, sports & societies, volunteering opportunities and much more! I got involved with the Common Room in my first year and have not looked back since. It’s helped me meet some incredible people, acquire skills I never would have picked up through my degree alone, and take part in things I never imagined I’d try.

We also understand that transitioning to university life isn’t always easy. Whether you’re facing personal challenges or financial pressures, we have a dedicated peer support team and students funds available to help our members. We care about our members and want them to thrive during their time here at St. John’s.

Welcome and Orientation Week is just around the corner, and behind the scenes is a brilliant and dedicated team of student volunteers who are hard to work to ensure your first week here is as fun and memorable as possible. They’re planning a wide variety of events, so no matter your interests, there’ll be something for you to enjoy.

Finally, I want to say that it is okay to be nervous. But remember, you deserve to be here. So, take a deep breath, be proud of what you have achieved and get ready for your next chapter here at St. John's!

All the best,

Oliver

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
