On Friday 4th October 2024 a blue plaque was unveiled at 12, Church Street, Durham to recognise Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp.
Dame Rosemary was a renowned Anglo-Saxon archaeologist responsible for leading the excavation at the twin monastery of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow and the first female Professor of Durham University. On her arrival at Durham, Rosemary lived in a fellows flat at St. Mary’s and was a “moral tutor” at the College for many years. She was an active participant of the Senior Common Room at Mary's throughout her time at Durham and remained a member of the SCR until her death last year.
Vice Principal of St. Mary's, Kate Morrey, was invited to attend the unveiling as a representative of College. Speaking about the event, she said; "It was a privilege to attend the unveiling of the blue plaque to Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp and see her contribution both to the field of archaeology and Durham University acknowledged so publically.
