BFI Industry-Ready Training

Following on from the huge success of the Durham BFI Careers Week, we are delighted to bring this exclusive series of workshops aimed at students who are serious about a career in film and television.  

Over the course of six hours (spread over two afternoons, on 8 and 15 February), four industry professionals will provide the key essential tools and information for students are who about to embark on their careers in film/tv production, post-graduation. 

The course provides honest, practical information from those currently working across the UK film & television industry. Students will also be supplied with a list of resources for further reading. 

All sessions are delivered via Zoom. Maximum 40 students.

  • Jude Winstanley: Line Producer, founder of The Unit List and events producer for the Royal Television Society
  • Matt Gallagher: founder of thecallsheet.co.uk, author of Breaking into UK Film and TV Drama and lead trainer for the Film Trainee Finder
  • Richard Knight: Location Manager (Four Lions, This is England) and lead trainer for Screen Yorkshire

An introduction to working in the UK film & television industry

This session will provide a look at the industry as a potential employer at this specific moment in time. Current issues and opportunities will be discussed across different production levels and types, both nationally and locally.

Cover e-mails and looking for work

How to write to companies and individuals to find work and resources for jobs, advice, training and information. 

4:15pm – 4:30pm 15-minute break
4:30pm - 5:30pm

CV writing: getting your CV to industry standard

Expanding your network and networking in film/tv plus honing the key skills needed to thrive in production such as problem solving, communication and multitasking.

 

Day Two

Interview technique: Once you are in the room, landing the job

Freelancing and finances: pay rates, PAYE vs self-employed, managing your finances
