American Football

Durham Saints host four-time national champions UWE Bullets at Maiden Castle during Alumni Weekend in a fixture with major playoff implications. Ranked third nationally, Durham know that victory would put them firmly in contention for the No. 1 seed, while also offering a first-ever win over UWE. Played in front of returning alumni and streamed live for supporters worldwide, the match represents a defining moment for the programme.

Saints Ready to Make History at Alumni Weekend Showdown

This Saturday at Maiden Castle, the Durham Saints are ready to prove they belong at the very top of British university American football.

At 4:30 p.m. on the 3G2 pitch, they'll face the UWE Bullets – four-time defending national champions who have never lost to Durham. Last term, the Bullets took the win. But this Durham team believes everything has changed.

"Right now we're ranked three," the team explains with confidence. "We believe as a team we should be ranked number one. We think we have the best group of guys on the field in the UK."

The mathematics are simple. Win this game, win out for the rest of the season, and Durham claims the No. 1 seed heading into playoffs. That's the path to a championship run, and it starts on Saturday.

"If we beat this and we win out, we're going to be the number one seed going into the playoffs, which sets us up for a huge championship run," the Saints explain.

But there's no shortcut to glory. The road to a national championship runs directly through UWE, and everyone knows it.

"UWE's won the last four national championships. Durham's never beat UWE either," the team acknowledges. "So we have national championship aspirations and to get to that goal we have to go through UWE."

Playing for Everyone Who Matters

Saturday's game carries extra significance as Alumni Weekend. Former Saints players from years past will return to Maiden Castle to watch the current team compete for something truly special, celebrating the legacy they built while witnessing the next chapter being written.

"This game is going to be our alumni game," the team shares. "We are going to get all the alumni from previous years to come back and it's a really special game for both us and them because we want to celebrate both their achievements and our own achievements at the same time and honour the legacy that they've put before us."

But the Saints aren't just playing for the alumni in the stands. The game will be live-streamed for free by BUCS, meaning families back in the States - some over 4,000 miles away - can watch every hit, every score, every moment of history being made.

And that connection matters deeply to this team.

"It means so much, honestly. That's part of the reason why we play," the Saints reflect. "We don't just play so no one watches. We play for our loved ones, we play for ourselves, and we play for each other."

From the alumni filling the stands at Maiden Castle to parents streaming the game on screens across the Atlantic, everyone will be there when Durham takes their shot at rewriting history.

Why You Should Watch

If you've never experienced American football, here's what makes it special. Every single play requires perfect execution from all eleven players on the field. It's the ultimate team sport where one missed assignment ends the play, but when everyone does their job, magic happens.

"I think American football is the best sport because it's the ultimate team game," the Saints explain. "It takes 11 guys to do their job to make the team win every play. Every play is a life of its own. It takes six seconds on average play. And if all 11 guys don't do their job, they won't succeed."

"It's also, I think, the most violent sport too, which is something that's a little different than maybe what you guys call football or rugby," the team adds. "The violence element and the physicality is nothing like any other sport I think and every play people are hitting running as fast as possible into each other and there's just so much action every play."

The Saints have spent this week preparing with laser focus. After using last week's match against Leeds to shake off the holiday rust and get back into rhythm, everything has intensified in practice.

"This week has been huge, just increasing the intensity in practice, making sure we're sharp every day, doing the right things well and doing the hard things even better," the team shares.
