On the 29th of April 2023, Durham University Boat Club (DUBC) attended one of their main regatta festivals, BUCS Regatta. A three day where DUBC looked to continue their hard work and success during the winter months, keeping the athletes in prime boat readiness for Summer meets.
Day 1 at the BUCS Regatta was a huge success for Durham as we picked up some incredible results with all crews and individuals racing exceptionally well. LwCh2x produced one of their season best performances in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls, putting in an impressive time which earnt them the gold medal. MCh8+ and WCH2- also displayed stella grit in the boat to secure silver medals. A big first day put DUBC in fine position to take on day 2 and 3.
Day 2 on the water brought further achievement as our crews managed to add to the medal tally with some fantastic displays of ore skills. The highlights of day 2 came through the women’s crews as WIntLw1x and WChLw4 displayed remarkable boat speed to land gold medals in their competitive races. An honourable mention for day 2 performances goes to WCh8+, MCh4-, MCh4+ and WChLw1x as the picked up bronze medals in high performance races. Two days of high-quality performances in the boats gave DUBC a lot of confidence going in the final day, hoping to secure the Victor Ludorum.
The final day at BUCS Regatta and it was a day to remember. DUBC woke with fire in their bellies and dominated the field. Out of the 13 races entered on the final day, DUBC impressively gained 9 medals. LwInt2- and Mint2- had two crews participating in each race. Extraordinary events unfolded in the two races, as both sets of crews blew the competition out of the water enabling DUBC to pick up gold and silver medals in the two races. A similar story unfolded for MCh2x as the men’s crews picked up gold and bronze medals. However, the medals and assertive performances in the boats didn’t stop there. WCh4+ and LwInt4x battled out on the water to come home victors and earn the crews gold medals. With WCh2x further adding to the medal count and securing a vital silver medal in their race.
A powerful display in the boat by DUBC picking up medals in prestigious races won them the Victor Ludorum. This is the first time in 8 years that DUBC have secured the Victor Ludorum at BUCS Regatta, adding to their earlier Victor Ludorum at BUCS Head of The River. The performances not just at BUCS Regatta but throughout the Winter season has truly marked Durham’s resurgence onto the University and National rowing scene.
DUBC now turn their focus to the Henley Royal Regatta and we wish them the best of luck!
