Durham University Student Athlete's Concur The International Sports Stage!

Durham Women’s Lacrosse Girls competed in the U21 European Women’s Lacrosse Championship in Prague during July. Millie Cant captained England, who were the eventual European Champions beating Czechia 9-4 in the final. Evie Tipping vice-captained Wales in the Championship. Evie and her teammates came 4^th after losing out in a tight bronze medal game against Sweden. The final Team Durham member who competed in this Championship was Pauline Brandenburg. Pauline played a vital role as goalkeeper for Germany, after a competitive campaign Germany bowed out of the Championship finishing 7^th overall.

Durham University Rugby Football Club’s rising star Harry Willard has had an exciting couple of months. Earlier in the year, Harry had the fantastic opportunity to train with current Japanese Rugby League Division 1 champions, Kubota Spears. After strong performances throughout the season and during his time training with Kubota Spears, Harry was selected to represent Japan at the U20 Rugby League World Cup, held in South Africa. A fantastic achievement for Harry and we can’t wait to follow his Rugby League journey to the Japan Senior Squad.

Durham Universities Hockey programme are blessed with an incredible amount of talented players. The high level performances of both the Men’s and Women’s teams during the 2022/23 BUCS season have not gone unnoticed on the international level. This year’s graduate and previous Women’s 1 captain Katie Birch has been selected to be part of Scotland Women’s Senior Squad for the upcoming EuroHockey Championships that will be held in Germany. Both Lizzy Pocknell and Scarlett Spavin have been selected to represent England Women’s U21 for the upcoming 4 Nations Tournament, competing against three of the best European Hockey nations in Germany. Additionally, Men’s 1 member James Vallely will also accompany Lizzy and Scarlett as James has been selected for England Men’s U21 at the 4 Nations Tournament in August. Furthermore, College Sport Coordinator and recent graduate Rebecca Daniels was promoted to Wales Senior Women’s Squad for their tri-nations test series earlier this June. Rebecca travelled to Uruguay for the test series where she faced fierce competition in the host nation Uruguay and Chile. Off the back of her strong performances during the tri-nations series, Rebecca has also been selected to be part of Wales Senior Women’s Squad in the Second Division European Championship later this year.
