Boat Club

Club President: Talei Dunn
Coaches:  Will Fletcher, Holly Young

Durham University Boat Club was established in 1877. DUBC trains on the River Wear, at their second boathouse on the River Tyne at Tyne United Boat Club; making use of the 24km stretch of water, as well as utilising the world-class facilities at the Sports and Wellbeing Park such as the indoor rowing tank, strength and conditioning hubs and ergo gallery.

The club consistently delivers competitive performances at university, national and international events. This is through training sessions provided by world-class coaches, envisioning a long-term game plan, and employing a driven attitude. The club also provides an encouraging yet enthusiastic environment in which athletes can grow as not only an individual, but as a crew, thus enriching their university experience. DUBC cultivates student athletes whose sporting and academic successes go hand in hand.

Crew

We are also one of few British Rowing High Performance programmes funded by the National Lottery. For many years the club has been a feeder for U23 Great British athletes, many of whom have gone on to represent their country in the senior squad at World Championships and the Olympics, proving to be a major stepping stone in athletes journeys to things greater and beyond.

Catch the iconic Palatinate coloured blades racing nationally at Head of the River, Henley Royal Regatta and Women’s Henley Regatta, BUCS, and many other events throughout the calendar year.

We are proudly Palatinate.

Sculling Camps

Summer sculling camps have been running at Durham University since 2003. The camps continue to grow in size and prestige on an annual basis. Our sculling camps run during July and August every year and are structured to cater for a wide range of ages and abilities. They are delivered by the team's experienced coaching staff who, in conjunction with DUBC students and volunteers, ensure that all of the participants are given the optimum opportunity to learn and develop during their time on camp. For more information please see the Sculling Camps section on our website.

Boat Race of the North

The Boat Race of the North is an annual rowing event between the boat clubs of Durham and Newcastle universities held on the River Tyne in Newcastle. The inaugural event took place on 18/05/1997. The Race is held over a 1500m course from Redheugh Bridge to the Millennium Bridge providing short and exciting racing.

Since 2015 the race had been sponsored by the NE1 business development company, with further sponsorship from Siemens in 2017. Since 2016 the events contested have been Men’s and Women’s 1st VIIIs, Reserves and Novice VIIIs – those who took up the sport at the beginning of the year. So far, Durham has won 8 of the 17 contested titles. There have been 4 draws, in 2 cases Durham retained the trophy and in 2 cases Newcastle retained the Trophy. In 2009 Newcastle took the overall title for the first time.
