Floorball is a type of indoor hockey played with teams of up to 20, comprising on multiple ‘lines’ of five players who rotate on and off, and a goalkeeper. As a fast-paced, inclusive, and low cost sport, it’s an excellent opportunity to try something new! We take pride in our team spirit, being a diverse mixed-gender club, and look forward to welcoming new members of all levels of experience. Lots of our club had never even heard of Floorball before starting at Durham!
Also known under the names ‘Unihockey’, ‘Salibandy’ or ‘Innebandy’, Floorball can be succinctly described as ‘ice-hockey without the ice’. Floorball is played indoors with plastic sticks and a light plastic ball. Players may use both sides of the stick, pass the ball off the walls of the ‘rink’ and can also go behind the goals. It’s a fast paced sport, with teams allowed to sub players on and off while the ball is still in play. In the University League teams play matches made up of two 15 minute periods. You can learn more about the rules of floorball by watching this YouTube video.
The team competes in the University Floorball League and in the 2024/25 season Durham finished 3rd in the UFL. The club also engages in regular socials to stay in touch with all members, with a slogan of ‘the alcohol is optional, but the fun isn’t’.
We are a club on the rise and are especially keen to welcome beginners – we have a healthy mix of experienced talent and players who had never even heard of Floorball before arriving at University. If you’re interested in joining or learning more, feel free to follow our Instagram or Facebook pages or just turn up to one of our sessions at any time!
