Facilities provided within the Durham X-ray Centre

Durham X-ray Centre provides a wide range of x-ray analytical techniques. These local laboratory based facilities are used by members of the Durham X-ray Centre to support research at national and international x-ray synchrotron sources.

Tomography machine

The facilities in Durham are available to external users either as part of an academic collaboration or through a commercial framework. The main techniques available in Durham are:

This equipment is based in the Department of Physics and can find the alignment of crystals or track lattice parameters through phase transitions

This equipment is based in the Department of Chemistry and can determined the structures of constituents in your powder.

This equipment is based in the Department of Chemistry and can find the structure of your protein crystal through x-ray diffraction

This equipment is based in the Department of Chemistry and can measure lattice parameters and determine the space-group of your crystal.

This equipment is based in the Department of Engineering and can generate 3D images and volumes of your object non-destructively.

  • X-ray reflectivity (multilayer and thin film samples) 

This equipment is based in the Department of Physics

  • X-ray wide angle (WAXS) and small angle scattering (SAXS) for polymers

This equipment is based in the Department of Chemistry

In addition,  we have strong links with other research groups throughout the Science Faculty to combine analytical and sample preparation techniques.
