Sedimentology and Sample Processing Laboratory

This laboratory is a flexible space dedicated to the investigation, preparation, and processing of geological samples prior to analysis.

The laboratory is used by multiple research groups across the department, from volcanology to sedimentology and experimental petrology.
Facilities

General sample preparation and processing equipment:

  • Wide variety of sieves
  • Local exhaust ventilation
  • Sink area for cleaning or wet sieving
  • Wide variety of glassware
  • Hotplate
  • Ultrasonic bath
  • Open format bench space for sample characterisation
  • Resin mounting, grinding (SiC) and polishing (diamond pastes and Al2O3 slurry)
  • Stereomicroscope and transmitted-reflected light microscopes for imaging during sample preparation
  • Low-temperature oven for drying samples

Other equipment includes:

  • 2 x cold-seal pressure vessels for in situ high-pressure, high-temperature investigation of geological materials (up to 200 MPa, 900 °C) (see experimental petrology)
  • Lampert PUK5.1 micro-spot welder
  • Microbalance
  • Malvern Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle size analyser used for characterisation of particle size distributions of samples in suspension
