2. Data protection and privacy
Durham University will store and process personal information provided in this application securely and in accordance with UK data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
Your information will be used to:
- assess and process your application
- administer participation in the programme
- communicate important programme information
- support welfare and safeguarding requirements
- improve our services through anonymised analysis
We will only share personal information where necessary to deliver the programme, to meet safeguarding requirements, or where required by law.
Consent remains valid for three years from the date given. You may withdraw consent at any time by contacting gfss@durham.ac.uk.

3. Application and participation
By submitting an application, the parent/guardian/carer confirms that:
- All information provided is accurate and complete
- The student is medically fit to participate in academic and social activities
- Relevant medical conditions, medications, allergies and support needs have been disclosed
- The University must be informed of any changes to medical or personal circumstances prior to arrival
Durham University reserves the right to withdraw an offer or terminate participation where information provided is inaccurate or where behaviour places the student or others at risk.
4. Health, safety and welfare
The programme operates under Durham University safeguarding procedures for under-18 participants.
The University will take reasonable care to provide a safe environment. However, participation in activities carries inherent risks associated with normal educational and recreational activity.
Durham University will not accept responsibility for injury, loss or damage except where caused by its negligence.
Students must:
- follow staff instructions
- comply with behaviour expectations
- respect curfews and supervision arrangements
Failure to do so may result in removal from the programme without refund.
5. Parental/guardian/carer consent
The parent/guardian/carer confirms that they:
- give permission for the student to participate in all timetabled activities
- authorise staff to seek medical treatment in an emergency if they cannot be contacted
- agree to provide up-to-date emergency contact details
- accept responsibility for travel arrangements to and from Durham University.
6. Fees and cancellation
The programme payment deadline will be confirmed in the offer letter. The full cost of the programme is £5,000.
Application deposit
A £500 application deposit is required when submitting an application to the Global Futures Summer School.
If the applicant is not offered a place the £500 deposit will be fully refunded.
If the applicant is offered a place the deposit will automatically be credited towards the total programme fee of £5,000.
If the applicant withdraws their application the deposit is non-refundable if you choose to withdraw your application after submission or decline an offer of a place.
Remaining fees
If a place is offered, the remaining programme balance must be paid by the payment deadline stated in the offer email. Failure to pay the remaining balance by the deadline may result in withdrawal of the offer and the deposit being retained.
Cancellation by participant
Refunds cannot be guaranteed. A refund may only be offered if the place can be filled by another participant.
Cancellation by the University
Durham University reserves the right to cancel the programme due to circumstances beyond its control. In this case, fees paid will be refunded, but the University cannot reimburse travel or visa costs.
7. Waiting list
If the programme is full, applicants may request to be placed on a waiting list. We will contact you if a place becomes available.
