Outreach

Our fundamental purpose is to develop, to stimulate and to cultivate an interest in Engineering. To help schools encourage their pupils in the study of Engineering we offer a range of outreach activities for groups of students or individuals. We have helped to shape the past and continue to shape the future.

School Visits

We enjoy hosting visits from schools throughout the UK and regularly visit schools within the region. Some of our undergraduates also carry out school placements as part of their study.
As a department, we support the Durham University Schools' Science Festival and the Celebrate Science event

Summer Schools

We offer a number of different residential summer schools for sixth form pupils who want a taste of our subjects. Supported progression offers local students from a wide variety of backgrounds a taster day at Easter and a five-day residential summer school.

Science Festival

Each year we encourage pupils from local schools to come along and take part in our Science Festival. We have previously supported over 350 pupils from 20 local schools to get involved in practically based Engineering activities, from designing and building miniature wind turbines, to designing aluminium structures that could be used in helicopter rescue operations. At the annual Science Festival, we give pupils the chance to develop their design and practical skills in a very dynamic setting.
