Durham Geography ranked 6th in world
We have been ranked 6th in the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The Department has achieved its highest-ever overall position in the QS World University Rankings 2026, rising six places to 6th globally from 11th in 2025. Within the 'research and discovery' lens that informs the rankings the Department also received the highest score of any Department in the world for research citations by paper (92.4).
These achievements reflect our ambition to be a leading global hub for geographical research—both a destination and a connector for outstanding scholars from diverse countries and backgrounds. Our research clusters drive innovation, serving as focal points for new ideas, experimentation, and collaboration.
As we continue to push boundaries and open new areas of inquiry, we are committed to fostering a research culture that is open, ambitious, and intellectually adventurous. This ethos is embedded across the Department, with staff and students working together to advance scholarship and share knowledge with communities and partners worldwide.
About the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026
The QS World University Rankings by Subject are among the most prestigious global rankings, assessing universities using indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations and international research collaboration.
The 2026 rankings analysed more than 6,200 institutions worldwide, with 1,900 universities ranked across 55 subjects, producing over 21,000 individual ranking entries.
