'Decolonising Language in History' was written by our Decolonising the Curriculum intern Emilie Tenbroek in summer 2021. The History Department's Decolonising Working Group hopes that it will initiate discussions in the Department, and beyond, about the use of language in academic texts.

Hereford Mappa Mundi

The Hereford Mappa Mundi videos were made by our undergraduate student Eva Macdonald as part of her Laidlaw Scholarship in 2021. They contain interviews with leading academics at Durham and beyond who reflect on race and ‘othering’ in the Middle Ages. In Eva’s own words, ‘constructed from a crucible of expulsion, exploration, and intellectual innovation, the Hereford Mappa Mundi is a prime example of the many wonders of the medieval world. Indeed, when offered the opportunity to conduct an extended piece of research as part of my Laidlaw Scholarship, I jumped at the chance to delve further into this particular 13th century world view. Moreover, through discussion with renown academics from all over the globe, these videos highlight pivotal contemporary debates on how historians approach the study of race in the medieval period and beyond.’
