Historians Co-operating with the Commons
Research by Durham historian Dr Henry Miller has been featured as part of the House of Commons’ new series of case studies illustrating public participation in political change.
His research analyses the Co-operative movement’s efforts to defend their existing privileges in the 1920s and 1930s, which involved a petition of 3.3 million signatures. The piece considers the long-term impact of their pressure, even if they did not achieve their short-term goal. It is the first of a series of historical pieces for the House of Commons website written by members of the AHRC-ESRC Petitioning and People Power in twentieth-century Britain project, which is a collaborative project between Durham, Leeds, and Liverpool universities.
