The Daily Mirror recently ran an exclusive story based on original research by Durham Law School’s Professor Thom Brooks.
Professor Brooks examined the official statistics and uncovered that the UK government has been accepting and recognising Rwandans for asylum in the UK. The finding undermines the government’s contention that Rwanda is safe for processing any asylum seeker in Britain because of the fact that Britain is granting asylum to Rwandans here. As Professor Brooks notes, Rwanda cannot be safe for all if the Home Office is granting asylum to its citizens here. These findings could impact a major decision expected this autumn at the UK Supreme Court on whether the government’s plans to remove asylum seekers for processing in Rwanda can proceed.
