The Durham team has showcased outstanding advocacy, adaptability, and stamina in all five rounds.
Congratulations to Ching Yin Curtis IP (LLB Student) and Sebastian Kenelm Gittes (MJur Student) for finishing as runners-up at the prestigious Inner Temple Inter-Varsity Moot Competition 2025.
With 18 teams from universities across the country participating in the preliminary rounds, the top eight teams then advanced to the knockout rounds. Competitors were required to argue for both sides of the case, demonstrating adaptability and extensive legal skills. This year, the moot problem focused on a novel issue concerning the fairness of contract terms and the enforceability of penalty clauses.
The Durham team has showcased outstanding advocacy, adaptability, and stamina in all five rounds. In an intense final against Swansea University, they skillfully presented their case before an esteemed judging panel comprising Master Reader Helen Davies KC, Master Kabir Sheikh KC, and Master Caroline Willbourne.
Finishing as runners-up, the team was highly praised for the quality of their legal arguments, their rapport with the judges, and their ability to respond effectively to judicial interventions. This marks the consecutive year that Durham has reached the finals of the competition.
Reflecting on the experience, Curtis commented "It was a true privilege to represent Durham, and to present legal arguments before the esteemed Masters. I am grateful for the invaluable feedback that will guide my legal journey".
Sebastian added, "It was a terrific opportunity to practise my advocacy before such a distinguished panel of academics and practitioners".
