Ambassador Jackman Appointed Honorary Fellow at Durham Law School
Durham Law School is pleased to announce the appointment of Ambassador François Ayodele Jackman, Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, as an Honorary Fellow. Ambassador Jackman will work closely with colleagues at Durham Law School and the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy (CSDLP).
A Renewed Connection with Durham
Ambassador Jackman’s relationship with Durham University was recently renewed during a 2023 writeshop held ahead of the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on Climate Change, where he joined an expert panel alongside Professor Petra Minnerop.
He is also a Durham alumnus, having completed a Master’s degree in International Boundary Studies at the University.
“One of the most fruitful, challenging and productive moments of my working life,”
Ambassador Jackman reflected on his time in Durham, noting that the experience
“prepared [him] for complex work assignments” and left a lasting impression.
Distinguished Diplomatic Career
Ambassador Jackman brings nearly three decades of diplomatic experience, including senior roles representing Barbados and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at the United Nations, service as Ambassador to China, and earlier postings in Beijing. His work spans international diplomacy, multilateral governance, and Global South–Global North engagement.
His longstanding engagement with international law, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation aligns closely with Durham’s JusTN0W conference series and broader research agenda.
Deep Historical Ties Between Barbados and Durham
This appointment also recognises the historic relationship between Barbados and Durham, dating back to 1875, through the association between Durham University and Codrington College in Barbados.
Strengthening Global Engagement and Policy Impact
As an Honorary Fellow, Ambassador Jackman will contribute to Durham Law School’s work on international diplomacy, United Nations processes, and Global South perspectives. He will support CSDLP’s mission to connect legal research with real-world policy impact.
Durham Law School and CSDLP warmly welcome Ambassador Jackman and look forward to strengthening this collaboration.
