The Mathematical Sciences First-Generation Scholars group is run by Katie Gittins, Clare Wallace, and Denis Patterson.
Our group is part of Durham University's First-Generation Scholars (FGS) network. The FGS network aims to support, celebrate and promote the achievements of people who come from backgrounds that don't typically go to university, as well as those who are the first generation in their family to go to university.
We hold several events each term to allow first-generation scholars to meet and discuss their specific experiences and challenges in a relaxed and supportive environment. Incoming first-year maths students can request an FGS staff member to be their academic advisor. We've also previously hosted more focused workshops on issues like career planning and postgraduate study.
Any Durham University member who identifies as a first-generation scholar and is interested in Mathematics is more than welcome to join! Please contact Katie, Clare, or Denis if you want to join the group mailing list or have questions or comments about First-Generation Scholar issues.
