Black History Month Lecture

In a lively and engaging talk on averages with arithmetic weights, Dr. Nazar Miheisi told us about interesting results at the intersection of ergodic theory, number theory and analysis. He also introduced some of his mathematical heroes:

• Scott Williams, Professor of Mathematics at the University at Buffalo, SUNY and co-founder of the Committee for African American Researchers in the Mathematical Sciences.
• Idris Assani, Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with pioneering results in ergodic theory,
  probability, harmonic analysis.
• George Okikiolu, British-Nigerian Mathematician and inventor who published over 90 papers in analysis including an influential textbook on integral operators.
• Raymond Johnson, Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park who received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring for his work in supporting African-American students in 2015.

Biography

After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from King's College London, Dr. Nazar Miheisi completed his PhD thesis on convolution operators and function algebras under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Partington at the University of Leeds in 2012. In 2015, Nazar joined the Researchers in Schools programme before taking up a position at King's College London in 2017 where he is now Senior Lecturer.
