When you choose the 12-month MSc in Mathematical Sciences you will benefit from a research-led education where you learn the latest techniques from internationally-recognised specialists in their fields. The course has four streams linking together modules with a coherent theme: Pure, Applied Mathematics & Mathematical Physics, Probability, and Mathematical Finance. These are flexible and you can choose modules from other streams allowing you to put together a truly bespoke course adapted to your interests.

Advances in many fields from science, engineering and economy will be driven by those skilled in handling large parallel machines and data sets with extreme volume or velocity. The Durham MSc in Scientific Computing and Data Analysis (MISCADA) trains students in these areas, equipping them with essential professional, entrepreneurial and collaborative skills. The MSc has four streams: Financial Technology, Astrophysics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Computer Vision and Robotics, giving students the opportunity to apply their core knowledge to challenging, state-of-the-art problems from a particular specialisation.
The programme is for those with excellent technical skills (in particular mathematics and programming). It enables students to develop an understanding of how modern scientific computing and data analysis tools work, and to apply the latest data analysis and simulation technologies to their own specialism, whether for an employer, or in pursuit of a PhD.

Designed by experts in the field, the Master of Data Science (MDS) develops the specialist skills you will need to manage and analyse different types of data efficiently. This advanced understanding of complex data will give you a head start in this dynamic field.
The Master of Data Science is a conversion course that opens up a future in data science even if your first degree is in a non-quantitative subject (including the social sciences, the arts and humanities). The course begins with a range of introductory modules in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, tailored to previous experience, before progressing to more advanced contemporary techniques such as neural networks and deep learning to expand your knowledge and understanding. The MDS culminates in the research project, an in-depth investigation into an area of specific interest in which you apply the skills learned during the course to a research problem in an area of your choice.
