A member of Durham Physics technical support staff has been announced as the winner of a prestigious ‘Technician Award’ for 2023 by the Institute of Physics.
The Institute of Physics has recently announced Dr Jason Anderson, a senior technician in the Teaching and Research Laboratories Support team within the Durham Physics Department, as a winner of their annual ‘Technician Award’ for 2023.
The IOP Technican Award aims to raise the professional status of technicians, and highlight the diverse role of technicians in education, research and industry. It enables the community to recognise and celebrate the skills and experience of technicians and their contribution to physics. Jason is this year’s award winner in the ‘further and higher education’ category.
Jason is well-known to our students as the lead member of technical support staff in the laboratories taken by all second-year Physics undergraduates, and as the cheerful face of the 3d-printing service - producing bespoke components for labs and projects in the department and more widely across the university. The award nomination cites Jason’s outstanding contributions to modernising taught laboratories in line with modern research practices, and his efforts in enabling delivery of remote and hybrid laboratory teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic – although anyone that knows Jason will know that this is only a small fraction of what Jason does for the department.
Jason will be presented with a trophy and certificate at the annual IOP Awards Dinner, and also receives a prize of £1000. Congratulations, Jason!
