Durham is a small, lively, scenic city dominated by its cathedral, a world-famous masterpiece of Anglo-Norman architecture. As well as impressive architecture, the city offers students a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants, cinema, theatres and excellent sports facilities. Living in Durham is cheap compared to the South of England with excellent transport links to other parts of the region - Durham is a 15 minute train journey away from Newcastle upon Tyne, a social, commercial and cultural centre of the North East.
Durham is a collegiate university; each full-time student is a member of one of the colleges and societies. These offer pleasant accommodation close to the academic departments, facilities for sport, music and drama, and the opportunity to develop a wide circle of friends across the years and across subjects of study. Each of the colleges in Durham City admits physicists, and all are just a short distance from the Physics Department.
