Congratulations on receiving an offer to study Combined Honours in Social Sciences at Durham University! We are a very competitive programme with a large number of applicants each year, so it’s a great achievement to have received an offer from us. We are really looking forward to meeting you at the Post-offer Visit Days so that we can explain to you a bit more about how the degree programme works and give you an opportunity to meet some of our staff and current students. It will also be a great opportunity for you to ask us any questions you have and for you to understand more about the flexible options on offer within our programme.
Within the Combined Social Sciences degree framework, you can study two, three or four subjects in your first and second year, specialising in two or three by your final year. You can see more about the specific subjects on offer in our About the Degree webpages.
You will already have completed our subject-choice form to tell us which subjects you plan to study within your CHSS degree programme. Below you’ll find links to some short videos from some of our Social Sciences department colleagues to help you learn a bit more about subjects you might not have encountered at school such as Anthropology, Education or Sociology. You’ll also see how subjects you are familiar with such as Geography or History might be approached differently at university.
Through watching the videos and doing some activities with us during your Post Offer Visit Day, you’ll have a better idea of what studying CHSS at Durham would be like for you.
The following links take you to a YouTube video. Please note that the information in the videos is indicative content, and staff and modules can change each year due to our research-led teaching.

We are happy to welcome guests of offer-holders to our Post-offer Visit Day session if we have enough space, but we will need to prioritise seats for offer-holders if we reach capacity for the room.
There are several university cafes located very close to the room for our Post-offer Visit Day session, so if we reach room capacity we may need to ask guests to go and have a coffee for a short while and return later to ask questions in the 11:30 / 15:00 session.
The following link will provide full details about the day: Post-offer Visit Day Guide 2026.
