Master of Social Work

At Durham University, we use the global definition of social work. Our Master of Social Work (MSW) degree emphasises the connections between local and international issues in social work practice.

Our Master of Social Work is a 21-month programme that will equip you with the knowledge, skills and values that underpin social work practice with individuals, groups and communities. Qualify as a social worker and make a difference.

Our approach to social work is world-leading. Our academic colleagues are experts in their field and are aligned with our four research themes, underpinning our distinctive identity as a social work team.  When you join the Department of Sociology, you will receive a high-quality education with foundations in research and real-world experience. You will also engage in lively debates with peers from varied career backgrounds.

As an MSW graduate you will be highly employable, joining our alumni community who shape social work policy and practices locally and globally.

We have a limited number of NHSBSA Social Work Bursaries available to eligible students confirming a place on Master of Social Work (MSW). The social work bursary can help with study and living costs. It is a grant, not a loan and is allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If you'd like to find out more, please get in touch.

We were named the University of the Year in the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2021. Find out below how our postgraduate taught programmes help our students to achieve their career goals and provide support to those who need it.

The NHSBSA scholarship has helped me more than I could put into words. I work part time and have done all throughout my undergraduate degree, working full time over holidays. However, this scholarship has eased the pressure to. be continuously working. It has helped ease my mind, which means I can concentrate on my studies and not be continuously worrying about money.

The content is so interesting. I have to add that I've never ever had support from tutors like Durham. They exceed and always help every student when needed. They really are the best!
