In 2004 the Department of Sociology launched the Master of Social Work programme. For twenty years we have worked with external partners and expert academics and staff to support the next generation of people passionate about making a difference. People with ambition to shape social work policy and practices locally and globally.
Here, find out more from our teaching staff, Head of Department and take a look at the highlights of the last twenty years as we look ahead to what's next.
I’m proud and delighted to celebrate twenty years of Social Work education at Durham University. Social Work is an important profession providing families, children and vulnerable adults with crucial support, meet their needs and, in so doing, enact social justice. It is a valued aspect of the University’s civic strategic goals, meeting the needs both of the regional labour market and local people and children facing severe hardship and need.
The Master of Social Work team displays 20 years of dedication, impact and excellence. Meet some of our incredible teaching staff and students below.
As a partner agency, what I enjoy most about working with the MSW programme is sharing experiences with students about working with young carers and helping the students to learn about caring roles and their impacts. For those interested in joining the MSW, be prepared for hard work, be open minded and curious!
The course is simply fantastic. I cannot emphasise enough the effort the entire Sociology Department puts into the programme, from support academically to the quality of visiting guest lecturers. They respond to feedback and adapt the course accordingly. I have been inspired, challenged, and engaged. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to embark on this course. If this is the subject you have decided upon, Durham University Sociology Department is at the forefront of modern social work research/practice.
Our world-leading researchers have been at the forefront of safeguarding, community engagement, social work practice and social justice for 20 years. Together, they have been challenging how things are done and finding better ways to support a global community.
