Studying Sociology at Durham has been a transformative experience. The passionate lecturers and seminar leaders brought real world issues to life, from exploring the injustices of Grenfell Tower to critically examining policing practices. They encouraged me to question assumptions, consider different perspectives, and build strong arguments and counterarguments. My Supervisor was especially encouraging, offering thoughtful support and genuine enthusiasm for every new idea I had. Learning about systemic inequality and social injustice has shaped my worldview and led me to pursue an MPhil in Criminology. I will always be grateful to the department for recognising and nurturing my potential

I’ve really enjoyed this course for its attention to historical and contemporary societal issues. It brought together my humanities-based interests in a way that felt consistently relevant and engaging. Modules like Digital Culture, Sociology of Health & Medicine and other Criminology options stood out. The mix of lectures, seminars, and group projects added variety and structure. My dissertation was a highlight of my final year and the consistent support from my supervisor made a huge difference to my confidence and progress. The course helped me approach real-world issues more critically and articulate my ideas in both applications and interviews

What I’ve loved most about studying Criminology at Durham is that the range of modules is genuinely impressive, covering everything from reproduction and parenthood to feminist activism and forensic science. There’s a strong sense of academic independence, allowing you to create your own essay questions and explore topics that genuinely interest you. The variety of assessment types, from traditional essays to scrapbooks and research projects, has also helped me develop a wide range of academic skills. One of the biggest highlights has been the open, student-led seminar discussions which encourage debate and critical thinking around some of today’s most important social issues.

Studying Criminology at Durham University has been an incredible journey. When I began, I was completely unfamiliar with the subject, but I have since fallen in love with the course, the content, and the new perspectives it has given me on the world. The Department has been incredibly supportive and encouraging; their dedication to students was especially evident throughout my years of study, during which they offered extensive feedback, prompt communication, and generous office hours. Although I am still exploring my career path, I feel confident this course has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to pursue a wide range of opportunities.
