I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Sociology. These are challenging and difficult times, but the programmes we offer here at the Department are based on a collective development of the ‘sociological imagination’ and its application to contemporary processes and issue. Your time in the Department will no doubt enable you to understand the world we live in more fully, and develop ways to improve it.
I believe that you will have a great experience here in the Department of Sociology and at the University with an education deemed to be world class and an inclusive and research based curriculum. Other than the learning that you will pursue over your time in Durham, remember also to take advantage of the many other opportunities we offer in the university. These include wider student life in colleges and student societies/associations. I have no doubt that you will leave Durham University with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to make a real impact on the world.

Although originally hesitant to study Sociology, it has been an eye-opening and enlightening experience. The incredible and fascinating modules this degree offers, ranging from Reproduction and Parenthood to Gender, Health, and Medicine, have allowed me to discover my particular interests and explore a wide array of new topics. The freedom and flexibility of each module have been my favourite aspects of Sociology; from choosing our own essay questions to using non-academic material and incorporating our own experiences, these elements have enriched my learning journey immensely. One aspect that stood out during my Sociology studies was the support provided by the Sociology department.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Durham University studying MSc Criminology and Criminal justice! The course is structured in a coherent manner as students are allocated some important core modules but also given the choice to select modules that suit their own academic interests which enhances the learning experience. There is so much variety in the way that teaching is delivered using traditional lectures and seminars but also throughout the year there is ample opportunity to visit criminal justice organisations, attend guest lectures and to go onto placement. Furthermore, all staff members in the Department of Sociology are very supportive and the doors are always open.
