Entry Requirements

For entry at PhD level you will normally be required to have a solid MA degree (i.e. average above 65% or equivalent/GPA of at least 3.7) in Theology or Religious Studies, or another relevant discipline. (We will consider applicants with an MA from a cognate discipline (e.g., Classics, Philosophy, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology…) on a case-to-case basis. An important criterion will be a proper fit between past academic degrees and the proposed research project.

For entry at MA level or for the Integrated PhD, you will normally be required to have a good honours degree (such as a First or a good 2:1/GPA 3.7 on a scale of 4.0) from a recognised institution, in Theology, Religious Studies or another relevant discipline.

The normal entrance requirement to the DThM is a master’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies or a related subject. This should be at merit level with an overall average of 65% or above.  M-level graduates in other disciplines who have studied Theology or Religious Studies to at least Certificate level (with marks at credit or higher) may also be considered for admittance to the programme.  Further information is available on the Departmental website or by contacting the Programme Director.

English language requirement: Applicants for whom English is not their native language, or who have not previously obtained a degree taught in English from a university in the UK or another English-speaking country, as defined by the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI), within two years of their proposed start date, must satisfy our English language requirements prior to registering for a degree.  These requirements are set out in the Learning and Teaching Handbook and on page 10 of this booklet.
