Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are the UK government’s flagship innovation programme, designed to help businesses innovate, grow, and strengthen their competitive position through collaborative research and development.
Each KTP creates a powerful partnership between your organisation, Durham University’s world-leading academic experts, and a highly skilled graduate known as the Associate. Together, you deliver a focused strategic project over one to three years, directly aligned with your commercial objectives. With Innovate UK funding covering 50–67% of project costs, KTPs provide a highly cost-effective, low-risk route to accessing cutting-edge expertise and accelerating innovation.
Through a KTP, your organisation can:
A dedicated full-time Associate, employed by Durham University but embedded within your business, drives the project forward day-to-day. You also benefit from regular academic input, equivalent to half a day per week, ensuring your project is supported by the latest research and strategic insight. Durham University manages recruitment, HR, and visa processes, making participation straightforward and efficient.
KTPs deliver measurable commercial impact. On average, businesses generate £4.80 in value for every £1 invested, equivalent to a 480% return on investment. Typical project costs range from £100,000 to £120,000 per year, with business contributions of just 33% for SMEs and 50% for large organisations.
From initial scoping and partner identification through to delivery and reporting, our experienced team provides comprehensive support at every stage, ensuring your project delivers meaningful, lasting value.
