Huge congratulations to our student musicians from Durham University Brass Band (DUBB) who won not one, but a total of four awards, including overall winners, at a UK-wide brass band competition.
As well as winning the overall award, the UniBrass Trophy, DUBB also won: Best Student Conductor, with Thomas Hicken conducting the band, the Most Entertaining category for their lively performance and Best Percussion with Martin Davies as percussion.
Postponed from February due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UniBrass, the University Brass Band Championship of Great Britain, went ahead this year hosted by the University of Sheffield.
Bands from eight universities competed to win the prestigious UniBrass Trophy, with bands judged on both their musical ability and how entertaining their performances were. The competition was delivered slightly differently, with bands performing in outside spaces, rather than inside the usual concert halls, in line with current Covid-19 restrictions.
President of Durham’s winning Brass Band, Adam Greenbank, is delighted with the band’s performance: “UniBrass is always the highlight of the year for Brass Band. Being able to take part at the end of such a difficult year made it doubly special, especially with UniBrass being the first in person brass band contest since the start of the pandemic.
“We were absolutely thrilled to take home so many awards and the overall victory - I couldn't think of a better way to end the year. The standard of our performance is a testament to the hard work the entire band has put in this year, both in online rehearsals and the long-awaited return of in-person playing this past term.”
