Hot on the heels of recent sell-out runs across the country, Durham Revue our very own nationally renowned sketch comedy troupe, are bringing their hilarious new material to a home audience at Gala Durham this February - and they won’t be alone. They will be joined by Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning, The Cambridge Footlights, to present ‘ComedyFest!’
This one night only event promises to deliver a laugh-a-minute, showcasing the best of the UK’s upcoming comedians from Durham and Cambridge Footlights, the comedy troupe that was the starting point for many famous comedians including Monty Python, Stephen Fry, Mitchell & Webb, Olivia Coleman, Ed Gamble, Mel & Sue and many more.
Durham Revue’s Comedy tradition
The Durham Revue’s annual Gala Theatre show has long been a tradition of the group and is consistently considered a comedy highlight. First founded in 1974, Durham Revue has boasted many members including the Neil’s Dad from The Inbetweeners, Alex MacQueen, the inimitable police officer from popular TV series ‘Allo ‘Allo , Arthur Bostrom and BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine, as well as comedians, Nish Kumar and Ed Gamble.
One past President of the Durham Revue, Ambika Mod, (2017) is currently starring on our screens in the BBC dramatization of Adam Kay's book 'This is Going to Hurt'.
What’s special about ‘ComedyFest’?
Co-President and writer for The Durham Revue, Ben Lycett, explained what the show means to the group; “This is by far everyone’s favourite show to perform in, the atmosphere is always electric and the reception we’ve got in the past has really taken our breath away. Having had to cancel this ComedyFest last year, we’re all chomping at the bit to get out there and deliver our typically slick, professional and hilarious brand of comedy. We want to give the audience plenty of reasons to laugh, especially after a period of time when laughs been harder to come by.”
Audiences can expect a raucous two hours of sketch comedy, with a wide variety of characters from Count Dracula, to the Witches in Macbeth, and even Mrs Tweedy from Chicken Run gets a look-in.
