Our Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Professor Antony Long, has announced his intention to retire.
Antony has been associated with Durham University for almost 40 years, having been a student here from 1985. In that time he has built a reputation as an internationally excellent researcher, specialising in past and future sea-level change.
He has twice served as head of our Geography Department, which is among the best in the world, and has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost since November 2016. He served as Acting Vice-Chancellor and Warden from August 2021 until January 2022.
Antony will retire on December 31, 2022.
We will shortly begin an international search for our next Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost. Professor Richard Crisp, currently Deputy Provost, will serve as Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost in the interim.
Professor Karen O’Brien, our Vice-Chancellor and Warden, said Antony had given outstanding service to the University and his leadership would leave a considerable legacy.
Joe Docherty, chair of our governing body University Council, said he admired Antony’s clear and consistent ambition for Durham to continue to be a globally outstanding university and to do even better still.
Antony said he had enjoyed a very fulfilling academic career at Durham, which he called an exceptional place to work, and wished the University the very best for the future.
