College bars secure national safety accreditation

The bars have been endorsed by the Licensing Security and Vulnerability Initiative (LSAVI), proving they have high standards of security and safety.

The safety and wellbeing of our students is very important to us, and we’re proud that so many of our college bars have gained this important accreditation.

The initiative was developed by the UK’s elected Police and Crime Commissioners. It offers a self-assessment toolkit designed to help owners and operators of licensed premises provide a safer and more secure environment for their managers, staff, customers and local communities.

Bar owners receive personalised advice and recommendations including how to prevent crime and disorder, promote public safety, prevent public nuisance and protect children from harm.

Joy Allen, Police and Crime Commissioner for Durham, called the University’s success a ‘phenomenal achievement’. She hopes privately-run bars will also achieve the accreditation.

Charlotte Sikorski, Bar President at St Chad’s College Junior Common Room Bar, said the process had been incredibly useful, and reflected an ongoing commitment to student wellbeing.

Our South College Bar received the first five-star LSAVI in the UK earlier this year.
