Want to know more about how we interact with our local community? Our monthly Community Newsletter explores the news, events, and research both at Durham University and in the city itself.
In the newsletter we celebrate our strong performance in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025.
We rose two places in the respected rankings to be named the UK’s 5th top university.
We also highlight the news that television presenter Matt Baker and his parents Janice and Mike recently visited the University to film an episode of his TV series ‘Travels with Mum and Dad’.
They toured our Botanic Garden and Durham Castle to film for the episode which you can still watch on Channel 4 catch up.
Meanwhile we highlight how we’re working with four County Durham colleges via the Durham Learning Alliance to expand education opportunities for young people in our region.
There’s plenty of events to enjoy in and around the University and Durham City this month and we spotlight some of these in the newsletter.
They include our professional concert series MUSICON which returns for its 56th season on Saturday 12 October.
Our Oriental Museum is hosting family fun activities throughout the month and the Sir Thomas Allen Theatre programme is back underway with tickets now on sale for a host of performances.
Our researchers continue to conduct impactful research and one of our Sport and Exercise Sciences experts travelled to the Paralympics Games in Paris to campaign for equality in physical education.
Two of our Sociology academics have published a new report that calls for more support for mothers who face challenges while trying to maintain a relationship with their children whilst in prison.
And our Physics department has made significant contributions to an innovative international project, the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS), that's shedding new light on the mysteries of our universe.
