The Oriental Museum, will be hosting its spectacular Lunar New Year Lantern Festival celebration on Wednesday 12 February from 6pm -8pm. Lunar New Year is celebrated across Asia and culminates in a Lantern Festival, when the streets are bedecked with lanterns and people invite good fortune and happiness into their homes for the year ahead.
This Lunar Year will be the year of the Snake and Oriental Museum will be decorated in spectacular style with red lanterns and community-made decorations. Visitors can enjoy musical performances by our talented Chinese Durham University students, dragon dancing, storytelling and snake-themed crafts. The event is suitable for all.
The Museum is especially excited to be welcoming the Moi Fa Lion dance team, who will be performing at the Lantern Festival. With their amazing lion costume and drumming, this promises to be a really spectacular highlight of the event.
Musical entertainment will include a performance by Durham University’s P’ungmul Korean percussion group . There will also be a recital by one of our students, Junyao, who will be performing songs on the guzheng - a traditional Chinese stringed instrument. Children will have the chance to join take part in our very own dragon parade around the galleries as well as the opportunity to try New Year snacks.
Due to the popularity of this annual event, tickets must be purchased online, in advance . Tickets costs £3 for adults and children, with children under 2 years go free.
