Professor Emily Thomas of our Department of Philosophy has been selected as a Marc Sanders 2025 Philosophy in Media Fellow.
With support from the foundation, Emily plans to write a trade book about the history of metaphysics. The fellowships are aimed at helping philosophers get public attention for their work and grow in the field.
Emily's scholarship covers the history of philosophy, including ideas of time, space, and matter in 17th to 20th century western philosophy.
Some of her work has involved bringing attention to forgotten women metaphysicians in history. For this, she was awarded a 2020 Leverhulme Prize.
She also researches philosophical issues around travel, including questions of how travel impacts our understanding of the outdoors, as well as the ethics of travel in the face of climate change.
In her critically acclaimed monograph, The Meaning of Travel: Philosophers Abroad, Professor Thomas explored the relationship between travel and philosophy from the 16th century onward.
Another upcoming book explores the history of the question ‘what is time?’ over the past 300 years.
Emily hopes to use the fellowship to take her career to the next level with the publication of a new book that will build on her previous work in the history of philosophy.
The fellowship comes with a $1500 stipend and fully funded attendance at a media workshop in the US.
